How To Get Your Microdermabrasion Procedure Covered By Insurance

Getting cosmetic procedures covered by insurance is a difficult task. Most insurance companies will be loathe to pay for a procedure that they don't think actually improves your health. However, many people will not be able to afford microdermabrasion without having the insurance company on their side. Here are some steps that you can take in order to increase the chances that your insurance company will cover your microdermabrasion procedure.

1. Prove That It's Medically Necessary

The first option is to prove to the insurance company that the microdermabrasion procedure is medically necessary. This is because it will be very difficult for an insurance company to turn down your request if you need the procedure to continue to live a high quality life. For example, many people have varicose veins removed because they don't like the way that they look. This type of procedure is not usually covered by insurance. However, if the varicose veins are causing a person a great deal of pain and making it difficult for him or her to walk fast enough to continue doing his or her job, then the insurance company will sometimes cover the procedure.

To prove that microdermabrasion is medically necessary, you are going to need to prove that you have some sort of medical problem that can be solved through this procedure. For example, microdermabrasion can help the appearance and function of people who are suffering from keratosis pilaris or from severe acne. If you can get your doctor or dermatologist to work as an advocate for you with your insurance company, you significantly increase the chances that the insurance company will consider the procedure to be medically necessary.

2. Check Other Types of Health Payment Options

If you cannot get your insurance company to realize that the microdermabrasion procedure is strictly for medical reasons, then you can try other health payment options that function somewhat like insurance. You could go to your work to see if they sponsor a Health Reimbursement Account, or HRA. With this type of account, you could get a medical procedure performed and provide proof of this to your employer. Then, you employer can reimburse you for some or all of your costs and receive tax deductions for this reimbursement. Talk to your employer before you have the procedure performed to make sure that you are eligible and that you don't need to do any preparations yourself. You could also see if your employer has any health matching plans where you put in money and the employer matches it, effectively halving the cost of the procedure for you.
